The day before JFK was assassinated in Dallas, he was in San Antonio and a picture of him in his automobile was taken on Broadway in front of the Cambridge Elementary School. Ninety children and three teachers lined the curbside to view the 35th President as he passed by enroute to Brooks AFB. A copy of that picture is in Alamo Heights City Hall. Some Citizens of Alamo Heights conceived, developed and executed a project to have a monument built to commemorate that event to include a detailed 5’ wide bronze panorama copy of the iconic picture and a plaque. The monument was placed and dedicated at Olmos and Broadway just outside the Cambridge Elementary property. The monument was dedicated on November 21, 2019, the 56th anniversary of the event. The Alamo Heights Night LLC, a 501c(3) organization, handled the administrative banking support for the project. Funding was provided by Jefferson, Frost, and IBC Banks and approximately ten of the Cambridge classmates from the time of the event. One of the current members of the Alamo Heights Rotary Club who was a student at Cambridge Elementary, and who was at the event in 1963, attended the monument dedication ceremony.
